Salmon manufacturers

When sourcing salmon, prioritize suppliers with HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point) certification to ensure food safety. For farmed salmon, look for ASC (Aquaculture Stewardship Council) or GlobalG.A.P. certifications, which guarantee sustainable and ethical farming practices. For wild-caught salmon, MSC (Marine Stewardship Council) certification is the gold standard. Additionally, ensure the product complies with FDA (U.S.) or EFSA (EU) regulations regarding heavy metal limits (mercury/lead) and veterinary drug residues.

Buyers should specify the Salmon Color Scale (SalmoFan) score, typically aiming for 23-27 for premium fillets. For frozen products, verify the IQF (Individually Quick Frozen) method is used to maintain cellular integrity. Request details on the 'Dressing' grade (e.g., Trim C, Trim D, or Trim E), where Trim E (skinless, boneless, fat-off) is the highest level of processing. Always confirm the 'Production Date' and 'Best Before Date' to calculate remaining shelf life for your local market.

Salmon is highly perishable and requires a strict 'Cold Chain'. Fresh salmon must be maintained at 0°C to 2°C (32°F to 35.6°F) using gel packs or dry ice, while frozen salmon requires a constant temperature of -18°C (-0.4°F) or lower. Ensure the logistics provider uses Data Loggers to monitor temperature fluctuations throughout the transit. Any break in the cold chain can lead to histamine buildup or bacterial growth, rendering the shipment unsellable.

The primary risks include Customs Clearance Delays due to incomplete health certificates and Price Volatility in the global seafood market. To mitigate these, ensure all Health Certificates and Certificates of Origin are pre-vetted by your customs broker. Use Fixed-Price Contracts for short-term stability or Formula Pricing linked to market indices for long-term bulk supply.

Conduct thorough due diligence by requesting Third-Party Factory Audits. For secure payments, use Letters of Credit (L/C) or trade assurance services provided by reputable platforms like Made-in-China.com. Avoid full upfront payments; instead, negotiate a 30% deposit and 70% balance against the Bill of Lading (B/L) and successful inspection report.

For fresh salmon, Air Freight is the only viable option to ensure speed, though it is costly. For frozen salmon, Reefer Containers (Refrigerated Containers) via sea freight are more economical for bulk orders. Always include Marine Cargo Insurance that specifically covers 'Refrigeration Breakdown' to protect against equipment failure during the voyage.
